For example, the interaction of serotonin with one type of receptor stimulates the formation of small molecules (i.e., second messengers) within the cell. Second messengers interact with other proteins to activate various cellular functions, such as changes in the cell’s electrical activity or in the activity of certain genes (see figure). These changes can result either in the inhibition or the excitation of the signal-receiving neuron, depending on the cell affected. Through these mechanisms, serotonin can influence mood states; thinking patterns; and even behaviors, such as alcohol drinking.

Influence of alcohol consumption on the dopaminergic system

Consequently, SSRI’s cannot be recommended as the sole treatment for alcoholism. Serotonin is an important brain chemical that acts as a neurotransmitter to communicate information among nerve cells. Serotonin’s actions have been linked to alcohol’s effects on the brain and to alcohol abuse. Alcoholics and experimental animals that consume large quantities of alcohol show evidence of differences in brain serotonin levels compared with nonalcoholics.

On the other hand, local administration of the dopamine D2 receptor antagonist, sulpiride, into the anterior VTA did not alter alcohol nor sucrose intake in high‐alcohol‐preferring rats [142]. It should also be mentioned that accumbal dopamine D1 receptor might regulate alcohol‐induced reward. Indeed, intra‐NAc infusion of a dopamine D1 receptor antagonist (SCH23390 or ecopipam) decreased alcohol‐mediated behaviours in rats [141, 143]. Collectively, these data indicate that the dopamine D2 as well as D1 receptors within the NAc regulate alcohol reinforcement. The within-subjects, repeated-measures study design afforded power to detect significant effects of dopamine depletion despite an otherwise modest sample size (34 individuals).

Previous research about the neurobiochemisty of alcohol dependence has focused on the DA system, but many of the findings have been contradictory. Further research aimed at clarifying the interaction between the DA system, the glutamatergic system and other neurotransmitter systems is needed before it will be possible to improve the effectiveness of interventions for preventing and treating alcohol dependence. A new study from McGill University suggests that people who are at risk for becoming alcoholics have a distinctive brain response when drinking alcohol in comparison to those at low risk for alcohol-use problems. People at high risk showed a greater dopamine response in a brain pathway that increases the desire for rewards according to the lead author of the study Professor Marco Leyton, of McGill University’s Department of Psychiatry.

Conditions associated with low dopamine levels

The impaired judgment you have when drinking alcohol may cause you to think that you can still drive, regardless of your BAC. Drivers with a BAC of 0.08 or more are 11 times more likely to be killed in a single-vehicle crash than non-drinking drivers. Some states have higher penalties for people who drive with high BAC (0.15 does alcohol trigger dopamine to 0.20 or above) due to the increased risk of fatal accidents. “To mitigate some of the effects of alcohol and prevent or lessen your hangovers, it’s recommended to limit your alcohol intake, drink water in between drinks, and try to eat foods with a high fat content to decrease alcohol absorption,” guides Dr. Krel.
